Bonavita BV1900TS Review & Rating
The new Bonavita BV1900TS 8-cup Coffee maker is an updated brewer of the Bonavita series, certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (ASCC).
This brewer has a design set to offer equal levels of vaunted coffee-making performance. Although not the typical sleek lined brewer, its simplicity adds a little extra touch into the brewing cycle, making coffee pots more gratifying.
- SCAA Certified
- BPA Free
- One touch functionality
- Optional bloom and pre-saturation
- Large showerhead
- Short power cord
- On/Off bloom function not intuitive
This one-touch coffee maker is designed to have fewer parts when compared to its fearsomely good adversaries. This makes the Bonavita more compact and easier to clean. Especially when compared to the Moccamaster or some Breville models.
When you first lay your eye on the Bonavita BV1900TS it will likely not be love from first sight.
This model has been stripped away of all the flash-like luxurious LCD panels, modern design, and the LED-lit blinking buttons. In fact, this one-button on and off switch tends to downplay its brewing talents.
The utilitarian approach extends to its’ built (non-frill industrial design and simple shape). At the top rests, a flat oval board with a circular lid at the left used as the water tank and a brewer lid at the right whose function is to conceal the showerhead.
This allows you to place directly under it a plastic filter basket a thermal carafe, or both. Although, this depends on whether you are simply storing a coffee pot or actively brewing your coffee.
With its minimal, sleek and curvier compact footprint-crafting measuring at 11.5 inches high by 10 inches wide, and 6.75 inches deep, the appliance is able to shelter on any countertop.
In terms of aesthetics, the BV1900TS has a less conspicuous attractive approach to it. Its shiny steel surface and plastic accents, black in color, gives it a modern look that blends nice and easy with contemporary kitchen decors.
Ease of Use
Straightforward and breeze operation: Whipping down a fresh pot of coffee has never been easier. Just like a b c, open the circular water tank lid and then decant a portion of water (note that the machine can only max out 8 imperial cups, 44 oz, 1.3 L). Add grounded coffee into the brew basket and place it over the thermal carafe.
Finally, flip the on-off switch. Hot water from the tank will flow over to the brewing lid with a showerhead-style spout and rain down into the coffee pot grounds.
Exclusive brewing experience: Unfortunately while brewing, the BV1900TS did not treat me to an entertaining sideshow of bubbling liquid like the Moccamaster KBG does. Except for the red light on the power switch and water dripping softly into the carafe, there was no indication that the brewing had started.
Water just drained at a speedy rate.
One-Touch Brew Operation: This makes brewing a piece of cake through a simple click of a button. This one-touch brew operation feature setting has an auto-shutoff design that prevents spillage and coffee over brews.
1500-watt heating system: This 1500 W heating system brews coffee at temperature levels ranging from 198 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit. This ensures that your coffee never finds its way into the microwave for a speedy heat up, and a cold creamer is not enough to cool it.
Flat-Bottom Filter Basket and Wide Spray Head: The flat-bottom filter basket has a wide spray head that ensures effective saturation of ground coffee in order to prepare an evenly brewed coffee pot. The narrow drip spout allows out the flow of water into the middle of your pile of grounded coffee. This weakens the coffees’ flavor since most of the less extracted coffee remains in the outer parts of the filter.
Pre-Infusion For Increased Flavor: This additional feature allows it to pre-infuse automatically (in simple terms ‘soak’) the ground coffee in water before the start of the brewing cycle in order to degas the beans. All you need to do is hold down for five seconds the on-off switch in order to activate the machine in pre-infuse mode. A red light flash alert at the switch indicates the activation of the brewing process.
Bonavita claims that pre-infusing helps in getting rid of overly acidic and unpleasant freshly roasted coffee beans flavors.
The Bonavita, BV1900TS performs like a champion, when it comes to its prowess in drip brewing coffee. By holding down its own blow for blow, it creates a full 45-ounce pot of coffee in under 8 minutes.
Heating numbers: By logging in temperatures within the brewing basket, you will be impressed by its skill in typically hitting the largely coveted 200-degree mark (Fahrenheit) in about 2 minutes, with the needle parked there ( ranging from 200 and 201 degrees) for the rest of the brewing cycle. This is the ideal temperature that the best coffee makers on the market need to maintain.
According to experts, this is in line with the Moccamaster, although it has the ability to reach 200 degrees slightly faster. With that, you might notice that the BV1900TS might increase its water temperatures a little bit faster at just under 190 degrees during the first few minutes of brewing.
Refractometer testing: The Bonavita BV1900TS consistently continues to serve up a pot full of delicious coffee. We found the TDS (total dissolved solids) percentage to be at 1.28%, which translates to an extraction percentage of 26.8%.
Even though this number is slightly higher than the ideal range of 18% to 22%, the Bonavita produced tasty and rich flavor coffee. Even though this can be considered over extracted coffee, it will leave your taste buds yearning for more.
Thermal Carafe: This energy star rated machine ensures that your coffee stays warm for almost 4 hours at above the 150-degree mark (Fahrenheit). With that in mind, the carafe temperatures will fall to 146 degrees Fahrenheit after 4 hours and ignite a regular cooling curve of about 10 degrees per hour.
‘Smoothness’ is the best way to describe coffee produced from this finesse Bonavita machine.
This is because it has a less bitter taste. The credit to this sumptuous coffee goes to the flat-bottomed filter basket and its somewhat large showerhead.
This showerhead has a design that allows it to distribute water evenly over the coffee grounds by ensuring uniformity during extraction. With this, you can hardly see unused grounded coffee in the brewing basket.
Since most parts are made of stainless steel, it is an assurance that the machine has the efficiency to last longer. This 8 cup coffee brewer has a backing of two years warranty with good customer care service guarantee. Its heating element consists of aluminum, which encases copper.
You can have your day under the sun without having to worry about the shattering of glass because the BV1900 is made of BPA free plastic.
It takes about 5 Minutes and 30 seconds to brew 8 cups of coffee.
Activating the pre-infusion button increases the brewing process to an additional 45 seconds of the total brewing time. Can you imagine preparing oatmeal, pouring coffee into your mug, and still enjoy the thrill that comes with the office rush?
Majority of its parts are made of stainless steel hence all you need to do is take a quick swipe through it. However, the Bonavita BV1900TS lip is mot drip-free, which means that you have to clean it inside out.
Beside its carafe and tank, the machine has a single element (filter basket) that needs hand cleaning.
It is, however, a recommendation that you descale the machine after every 100 uses cycles.
- Parts covered; the Coffee makers, the pour over stands, Kettles, and Scales
- Warrant period: one year on the Kettles, Pour over stands, scales and two years for the coffee makers.
- Warrant support: The Bonavita Company supports the warrant. According to terms and conditions, the Warranty is set to cover the manufacturer defects only. Unless the carafes arrive at the buyers’ door with cracks or any form of defects, they are not included in the warrant issued.
If you prefer a simple machine that delivers and has less options and buttons, then opt for this brewer. With zero, brew pause, programmability and timer, this Bonavita has proved to serve consistently mouth-watering great coffee.
Although both BV 1800SS and BV1900TS are SCAA certified and brew great cups of rich in flavour coffee, the BV1900TS has a redesign that places it on the success of its earlier version the 1800SS.
Just so, you know why you will be spending an extra $12, the Bonavita BV1900TS boasts of an auto shut-off feature, 1500-watt heater effective up to temperatures of 200 to 203 degrees Fahrenheit and a flat-bottomed filter basket.
